Petrolhead

SYNOPSIS

‘Petrolhead’ is a poignant narrative that follows the life of a young girl from the underprivileged strata of Iranian society. Despite her humble origins and the societal stigma surrounding her occupation as a waste collector and seller of plastic scraps, she harbors a deep passion for automobiles. Her dream is simple yet profound: to own a car of her own. However, her journey is fraught with challenges as she navigates the complexities of a patriarchal society, poverty, and restrictive laws that define her existence.

DIRECTOR STATEMENT

‘Petrolhead’ is a cinematic exploration of the harsh realities faced by the unseen heroes of society. It is a narrative woven with threads of hope and somber hues of tragedy. As a filmmaker, my focus has been on the lives of those who dwell in the shadows of poverty and societal constraints. This film continues my commitment to highlighting the struggles of Iranian women who confront life’s challenges with quiet resilience. Through the eyes of our protagonist, we witness the pursuit of a simple dream that resonates with the universal human spirit. ‘Petrolhead’ is not just a story of aspirations; it is a reflection on the fragility of dreams in the face of insurmountable odds.

As a filmmaker, I have always been drawn to the stories of the marginalized—particularly women and workers from poorer sections of society. This film is an extension of my previous work, ‘Tunnel,’ which delved into the struggles of child laborers in Iran. With ‘Petrolhead,’ I aim to shine a light on the resilience and aspirations of those who are often overlooked.

‘Petrolhead’ is a tribute to the indomitable spirit of Iranian women who, despite the absence of support, courageously battle life’s adversities.
